Caramel Popcorn Cookies

The working title of this post was, “How to have a wonderful birthday when you don’t have time to have a birthday.”

photo 2-1

Sometimes your birthday comes around at an inconvenient time.   This probs happens more often than not, seeing as most of us have life generally going on around us.  This year, the big 2-5 was 3 days before our exam over the gastrointestinal system.  So, you know, no big crazy blowout on the sched.  But I had a fabulous day nonetheless, in between all the notes about hepatitis and ulcerative colitis.  Here’s how you do it: Continue reading

Brown Butter Bourbon Apple Pie

Sometimes, it’s right in the middle of test week, and you decide to make a coffeecake, an apple pie, and homemade rolls for premature Friendsgiving.  You just decide this, and you don’t think about the fact that it is a stupid decision, and that you have no time management skills, and that there are more important life skills you should be working on with all this apparent “free-time” you’ve created to bake this stuff. Is there a class I can take about weddings?  Specifically, a class or a book that will tell me all of the very basic questions that people expect me to the know the answers to, even though the wedding is 2 AND A HALF YEARS AWAY?

I went with my mom to look at a possible place to get married.  (I believe that’s called a venue?  Seriously.  Need help.)  This outing wasn’t as embarrassing as a few weeks ago when I met this lady who likes to plan weddings on the side.  At that little meeting, I informed her that I thought we would probably have 4 ushers “on each side.”  Continue reading

Snickerdoodle Brownies

So, as we discussed, I (Hannah) spent the first part of spring break basically in the most enjoyable nap-coma of my life.  I also read The Hunger Games, and I now feel like I can belong to society again because I know what everyone is talking about all the time.  I haven’t read books 2 and 3 yet, so DON’T RUIN IT.  Shhhhhh.

I also went to the Texas Hill Country with the Weatherman!   I dunno if your state has something called “the hill country.”  In Texas, it is necessary for us to have this place, so that the people in the northeast corner of the state can be reminded from time to time that elevation can in fact change.  Also that there is a place in the state where things are green and not dead. Cinnamon-Pecan Filled King Cake

Well, we finally stopped procrastinating and changed our About page.  Go look!  You can learn some fun facts about Kate!  (My facts are still the same.  Boring.  Gloss over those.)  We are still searching for an acceptable picture of us that was taken post-2009, which we can hopefully create when I go VISIT Kate in AUSTIN in MARCH.

Now.  On to the cake.  I made king cake last year, and I believe I explicitly said “I know I’ll use this recipe again next year.”  False.  So false.  However, I also said last year that I’m a fan of king cake filling.  Not the fruit kind, and not the explicitly cream cheese kind (related to my dislike of cheesecake OMG don’t hate me), but the cinnamon-y, praline-y kind.  I’ve been on a lifelong journey for how to make such a filling.  Continue reading

Cinnamon Roll Cupcakes and Baking to End Cancer!

Hello friends!  This is Hannah up in hurr.  I am setting aside a very compelling reading on the formation of spongy bone (ew spongy) to talk to you about 2 crucial things!  One is actually more crucial than the other in terms of…well…the world.  So we’ll talk about that first.

Last week, thanks to the wonders of the Twitter-verse and La Casa de Sweets, I found out about an online bake sale hosted by Amanda at Kitchen Misfit.  Amanda is part of Team in Training, and she’s currently training for the Boston Marathon.  She’s hosting this bake sale to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and I think this is absolutely wonderful!  You can read about her training and why she’s doing this on her site. Snickerdoodles

Netflix is my nemesis.

I have access to a Netflix streaming account. I do not have access to much self-discipline.

As you can imagine, this is a terrible combination. Especially if you’re in your second year of law school.
